“Sometimes it’s darkest before the dawn.”
There are moments in life when the universe throws you a lifeline. This was one of them.
It was the middle of the pandemic. I was living in Brooklyn, raising two kids I was suddenly homeschooling full-time, navigating the slow-motion implosion of my marriage, trying to keep my business alive, and feeling the heaviness of the world like never before. Sirens were constant. A dear neighbor passed away from COVID, and I attended his funeral online—alone, crying behind a screen.
New York City was grieving. I was grieving. The whole world was in a kind of suspended disbelief.
And then—out of nowhere—Drew Barrymore’s team called.
Yes, that Drew. The producer on the phone had actually worked on Mob Wives years earlier (a full-circle moment if ever there was one). Now, they were part of this brand new daytime talk show that, like all of us, had to pivot fast when COVID hit. No live audience. No flashy studio segments. Just creativity, heart, and Zoom.
“Would you be open to doing a Galentine’s Day special with Drew and a few of her girlfriends?” they asked.
Would I WHAT?! WTF?! YES. I can. I will. And I couldn’t believe this opportunity was coming in the middle of one of the worst years of my life.
We brought The Artful Bachelorette experience straight into the bedrooms and living rooms of women across the country, virtually. Was it ideal? No. But was it joyful, healing, and necessary? YES. 100%.
People needed a way to connect. They needed to laugh. They needed to draw a beautiful human form with a glass of wine and remember what it feels like to be human—together.

We did the segment from my own Brooklyn bedroom—me in full makeup, slippers on, laptop stacked on a tower of books, ring light blinding me, trying to keep the kids quiet in the next room. And then I heard it: “Fleur” Drew Barrymore said my name.

Little Aussie me. Me, who grew up adoring her in E.T., dressing like her during her grungy slip-dress-and-combat-boot era. I was obsessed—but thankfully, didn’t follow her into the plucked-to-nothing eyebrow trend. Drew was always my icon: unique, radiant, raw. In a sea of sameness, she stood out.
And I’m a sucker for a rom-com. Always have been.
My Top 3 recommendations to watch with your girlfriends at your bachelorette party or at your galentine's day party ideas
🎤 The Wedding Singer (1998) – Her chemistry with Sandler? ICONIC.
🌺 50 First Dates (2004) – Wholesome, heart-melting, weirdly perfect.
📚 Never Been Kissed (1999) – Josie Grossie forever. That final kiss? Still gets me.
To be part of a moment with her, on national television, in the middle of heartbreak, pandemic, and personal chaos… it was like the universe said: “Here. You still deserve something good.”
Drew, we love you. You’ll never know just how much that moment meant to me. I’ll never forget it.

Sometimes when you think everything is falling apart, something beautiful is falling into place. Sometimes, it’s darkest before the dawn. And sometimes… Drew Barrymore says your name on national television and reminds you that life is still full of surprises.
